Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, Florida is a place
that is very dear to my heart. Ten years ago, with the Hemophilia
Foundation of Greater Florida, I had the honor of accompanying
the first group of boys with hemophilia to this wonderful camp
during the very first week it had opened.
Along with Paul Newman, retired Army General
Norman Schwarzkopf, aka “Stormin Norman,” is one
of the co-founders of Camp Boggy Creek, which is a member of
Hole in the Wall Camps?sm
General Schwarzkopf and I served in Vietnam
together (a long time ago!). This past summer during the week
of June 4 - 9, 2007, we came together to celebrate our ten-year
anniversary of Camp Boggy Creek. Joining us was our long time
friend, retired Army Lieutenant General James R. Ellis who serves
as the Camp Boggy Creek Chairman of the Board and CEO.
I always look forward to sharing “ole
war stories” with the guys, but mostly, we spend our time
talking about our Boggy Boys; their activities and accomplishments,
special memories of time spent fishing, and recounting their
amusing antics. Over the years, the boys that made up that first
group to visit Camp Boggy Creek have grown to adulthood. We
take pride in knowing that they have become responsible, productive
citizens and hope that their time spent at camp provided some
of the inspiration and direction to lead them to where they
are today.

Ed. note: Jim Lane has been
instrumental in organizing several financially successful fundraising
golf tournaments to benefit Camp Boggy Creek’s mission,
which is “to enrich the lives of children who have chronic
or life threatening illnesses by creating camping experiences
that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe
and medically sound.”
